November 2011 Workshop - Recap!

The 5th annual November workshop was a huge success!

The weather was beautiful, the volunteers were wonderful, the participants had a fantastic time and the Buckeyes won. What more could we ask for?

We were blessed to have some of the most fantastic volunteers at this workshop (volunteer to participant ratio was 1:1) along with lots of new participants. Everyone had a great time. It was truly our best workshop ever.

Many thanks to long time volunteer, Nancy Morris for leading us in the making of a Grateful Banner. This is the newest of our Brave Artist projects and was a lot of fun to create. We made beautiful banners to reflect what we were thankful for in our lives.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made this workshop such a success!

We look forward to seeing everyone again in February.

June Workshop Canceled

Hello Friends,

We are sad to inform you that we are canceling the workshop for June 11 due to lack of RSVP's from participants. We are planning on still having the workshop on August 6th, 2011 and would kindly request that participants RSVP as soon as possible and at least 2 weeks in advance.

Also, please consider donating to the Foundation to help support the next workshop ( Paypal account- https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=S7TL7QY7KSC52). The average workshop costs $35 per participant although we only charge $15 per person. As we assess this next year we are finding the Brave Art Foundation to be in financial need. If you wish to see the Brave Art Foundation and the Brave Art Workshops continue, please considering donating. If you cannot donate please pass on the paypal link to your friends, family and co-workers and ask them to donate to a cause that exists to bless you.

Kim Wilson, 18, of Westerville, creates a spring-inspired painting during a Brave Artists Workshop in the Vineyard Community Center in Columbus. The Brave Art Foundation, started by Barbara Jefferis of Upper Arlington and her daughter Anna is for teens and young adults with disabilities. The organization fosters artistic and social expression, giving young people the opportunity to decorate shirts, paint canvases and create greeting cards. The workshop was held Saturday.

Thanks to our photographer, Mark Maier, Brave Art was featured on page B3 of todays Columbus Dispatch! Check out the link for the color photo.

Spring Workshop Recap

The weather outside mirrored the spirit of our 4th annual Spring workshop: beautiful!

Many thanks to everyone who came out to help, especially our volunteers: Mark Maier, Nancy Morris, Amy Davidson, Drew Riedel, McKinzi Warren, Michael Bashaw, Andrew Bashaw & Leah Bashaw. You guys and gals are such a gift to those you serve!

We were very excited to have Bashaw Productions out to film for us today! As soon as the video is finished editing we be sure to share with you all. It is thrilling to look back over these past four years and see how we have grown. The future is bright and exciting!

The Brave Artists began the day by painting their canvases with the theme of "April Showers Bring May Flowers". The art turned out beautifully. After that the Artists moved on to various Spring themed projects such as decorating t-shirts with flowers and leaves, making a pillow, a wall decoration that reads, "Somebunny loves you", greeting cards, etc.

Lunch was sponsored again by The Amazing Tei Street. Thank you! We enjoyed a nice lunch break before continuing in our artistic creations.

The workshop finally came to an end as we said goodbye to many old and new friends.

February workshop was a blast!

Yesterday was the fourth annual Valentine's Day Brave Artist Workshop!

We are so grateful to everyone who made it happen! Special thanks to our volunteers - Amy Davidson, Tony Ward, Megan Sutherland, Andrew Nicely, Tom Provot (Megan, Andrew & Tom represent Anna's small group called Overflow), Nancy Morris and our guest artist, Alissa Burton and photographer Mark Maier.

Once again we were hosted by the Vineyard Church of Columbus Community Center. Thank you to the Community Center for allowing us to serve these past four years.

This workshop we had the honor of having our very first lunch sponsor! The Amazing Tei Street of Street Talk provided us with delicious pizza from Papa John's. Through Ms. Street's generous contribution we were able to provide enough snacks for everyone!

Baker's Delight also provided us with bakery as they faithfully have for four years.

We had a wonderful time painting canvases, decorating t-shirts, making valentine's and many other art projects. Mainly due to our incredible volunteers, we noticed a very peaceful and joyous spirit present among the participants. We are so proud of you all!

The art the was created by the participants was remarkable! It is so much fun seeing art skills be honed and the excitement be increased when a project is completed.

We hope to continue to improve and develop the workshop and the effort that goes into them so as to benefit all involved.

Our next workshop will be Saturday, April 9th 2011 from 11am-2pm and will be Spring and Easter themed! We are eagerly expectant as the year unfolds. We hope to continue to make new friends and nurture the old. We hope to see you soon!

The Best Workshop Ever!

Thank you to all our volunteers and participants who made today's workshop one of the best yet!

The day started off with Alissa Burton leading us in painting of a poinsettia on our canvases. We had many of the flowers scattered on our tables as well as a couple rosemary trees, all of which was donated by one of our Board members, C. Melia Wolf. Some of our participants chose to paint the flower, and others the tree. All of the artwork was beautiful and each artist reflected a wonderful interpretation of the subject.

Next, we decorated t-shirts with fabric paints. Some chose to use stencils of snowflakes while others free-handed their design. The result was simple and wintery.

After that was done we transitioned to the other side of the room to start work on making buckeye necklaces. The buckeyes were donated and in combination with red, white, black and grey beads, made fun and festive necklaces. This project proved to be a fun one that gave opportunity for volunteers to work one-on-one with our participants as the buckeyes were tricky to string on the cord. After some trial and error, both participants and volunteers discovered a few tricks for stringing the buckeyes and we were soon in a "groove" as it were. Each participant went home with their own handmade, unique, buckeye necklace. Success!

During our necklace making we paused to honor a few of our dedicated volunteers. We gave each a framed certificate of recognition. Tony Ward and Amy Davidson have been with the Foundation for over three years. Both are OSU students and have sacrificed many a weekend to serve. Over the years Tony and Amy have built relationships with some of our more regular participants. It is such a joy to see them interact, hear the laughter, see the smiles and most of all to see the growth in the participants they impact as well as in themselves.

We also honored Mark Maier. Mark has volunteered his time and talent to photo-document the workshops. Each time we are blown away as Mark not only photographs the event but interacts with all involved. Mark is the perfect fit for photographer, we couldn't have asked for better.

When we were just about done with the necklaces the pizza arrived and we enjoyed this special treat along with the banana bread and muffins provided for us by Baker's Delight. Baker's Delight is a ministry of the Vineyard Church of Columbus that bakes all sorts of deserts for the community. This ministry has graciously and faithfully provided us with our snack for years. Everyone enjoyed the snacks in contented lull whilst the holiday music played softly in the background.

Once we had all replenished our energy we moved on to making greeting cards and decorating pine-cones to look like ornamented christmas trees. The mini trees turned out beautifully and was a great edition to our repertoire.

We also made nests for the bird whistles that the participants made at September's workshop. C. Melia Wolf fired the clay whistles for us and we were able to distribute them to their creators this week. Even those who had not made one at the previous workshop were able to go home with one in a nest.

Once again we had a 1:1 ratio of volunteers and participants. So exciting to see old and new volunteers coming out to make this possible! Thank you everyone!

Thank you also to the Vineyard Columbus Community Center for hosting us for the past three years! The facility has allowed us many blessings and has served us well.

Hello from the Brave Art Foundation!

What a wonderful Spring it is this year! The BAF has been busy already this year with many exciting things like participating in the Summer Special Needs Resource Fair, holding the first ever Brave Artist Party and planning for the second annual Mother's Day workshop.

We were excited to meet many new faces at the Summer Special Needs Resource Fair!

The Brave Artist Party was a huge success! The High School Musical 3 theme was tons of fun. What a better way to spend a Saturday than with friends, games, HSM3 and pizza? Thank you to all the volunteers who made this possible! Check out pictures on our Flickr page!

Our next workshop will be held on May 2, 2009. Mother's Day will be the theme and details will be coming soon!
